Netflix reveals exactly how much money they spent on Squid Game - and it's less than you might think

After becoming their biggest original series and a huge global sensation, it has now been revealed how much Netflix paid for the massively popular Squid Game.

The streaming giant reportedly spent $21.4 million on the South Korean survival drama show, or $2.4 million for each of its nine episodes.

It's a relatively small sum compared to Netflix's existing shows, as well as other programs on rival streaming services like Disney+ and Amazon Prime.

In comparison to other Netflix properties, historical drama The Crown is paid $10-$13 million per episode, while Stranger Things gets $8-$12 million per episode.

Fantasy series The Witcher is estimated to have gotten between $70-80 million for its first season, or $10 million an episode.

Bridgerton, which was recently surpassed by Squid Game as the biggest show on the streaming giant, received $7 million per episode, according to reports.

Disney+ spends considerably more for certain properties, with budgets comparable to films.

The company spends $15 million for each episode of The Mandolarian and a whopping $25 million for WandaVision and Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

The most spent for a television show on a streaming service however is held by Amazon Prime's upcoming Lord of the Rings series, which cost a total of $450 million dollars for the first season ($250 of which went to just acquiring the rights).

While Squid Game's budget is relatively lower, Netflix does already commit $500 million dollars to South Korean productions every year.

Squid Game has become Netflix's biggest launch in the streaming service's history, with 111 million fans watching the series since its debut on September 17.

It is currently the the number one show on Netflix's Top 10 lists in 94 countries across the globe.
